Jelly Battle is a classic Flash arena game released in 2007 where colorful jellies fight it out by picking power-ups and hazards each round on a keyboard until one player is left standing. It had a real multiplayer mode back in the day, but the original online servers disappeared years ago along with the Flash era.

I rewrote the multiplayer backend from scratch so that mode can be played online again in the browser through Ruffle. This revival is an unofficial reimplementation meant for fans and new players to enjoy.

It runs on a custom Node.js backend written from scratch. That server speaks the same protocol the classic Flash client expects, so the original game can connect through Ruffle without changing the SWF itself.

How This Started

I started this project about two years ago after seeing a lot of people ask for multiplayer to come back on websites such as Reddit. With a background in software development, I figured putting those skills to use on a classic game I cared about would be a fun and rewarding project — so I decided to try rebuilding it myself. It took longer than I hoped — life got busy with work, friends, and family, and rebuilding a multiplayer backend with so little to go on turned out to be a very difficult project.

Along the way my computer with the original project files died from a motherboard issue, so I had to save up and buy a gaming PC before I could properly continue — those new generation hardware prices sure do hit you hard 😅

The video below is from early on, when I first started digging into it.

It's been a long journey, but I think others would agree it was worth the wait to have a chance to try out multiplayer mode again.

Known Limitations

Single player mode still works without the multiplayer server. For rights and ownership details, see the Disclaimer page.

I hope you have a great time trying out multiplayer mode again. Anyways, that's all — thanks for reading!
